MONDAY, 23rd April 2001
5:00PM
The first major casualty of the
on-going NUGA struck Sunday night when about 12 student-participants at
the on-going games sustained injuries following the collapsing of a
scaffold and floodlight pole at the Mamman Kontagora Square during a
basketball match. BUK was engaging ABU in the event, which due to pressure of spectators on the scaffold, the tragedy struck. The injured persons were immediately rushed to the sick bay for treatment. After the medical attention, Dr. Alex of the sick Bay referred the critically injured persons to the ABU Teaching Hospital in Zaria. Among them was Samuel Oruerio (UNIBEN) with head injury; Kolawole Bayioku (ABU) with a fracture on the neck and Oluwole Oni with fractured hand and bruises in the face. Those treated and discharged include ABU's Fantubi Folayi, Chinedu Eboji (UNIABUJA) and UNIUYO)'s F. Umuren. When visited at their sick beds the injured students lamented the slow pace at which the organizers of the games handled their misfortune, adding that "it is one thing to bring us here and another to give us the prompt attention required," one of them said. One of the injured athletes who managed to speak complained of demand for money from him to under-go operation. Samuel Oruerio who sustained head injury may have had his brain distorted as doctors are contemplating surgical operation on him, but no serious concern shown on him by the organizers. |
