About the Mascot

The A.B.U. (NUGA) 2001 mascot: the Hoopoe (Upupa Senegalease)also Known as Al Huda in Arabic is a common bird in Northern Nigeria.

This bird has a cultural significance because it is believed to be the "Professor" of birds i.e. having the ability to recite and memories.
The Hoopoe in Hausa culture unlike the Senegalese Cuckoo which connotes laziness is used as an acronym for a learned person.
Hence the choice as a mascot for A.B.U. 2001.
