OFFICIALS THREATENED TO DOWN NUGA GAMES by Saidu Abubakar,
MONDAY, 23rd April 2001
12:00PM
Officiating officials in the
on-going NUGA here in Zaria have threatened to down tools, unless their allowances are paid to them. The grudges of the officials include among others maltreatment by the Host University (ABU), saying apart from accommodation nothing has been provided to them without apology from anybody. Speaking collectively to our crew the officials stated that "we are responsible people here in ABU to perform our duty but nobody seems to appreciate this face. How can they ignore us since our arrival here, leaving us to feed ourselves. They should have packaged our entitlements even before our arrival but the reverse is the case. "Anyway, we have decided to withhold results until we are paid and if at the end of today (Monday), nothing is done, we will suspend officiating", said one of the referees. The officials may not be alone in the complaint as some members of the local organizing committee (LOC) of the games has also complained of being sidelined by certain top shot members of the Host University. "Apart from concealing affairs to themselves, nothing has been provided to members of one of the sub-committees who spoke on condition of anonymity said. The publicity/ documentation sub-committee which is responsible for even collection of results so as to make it accessible to journalists have failed to do so as computers have been mounted and lying idle without any result around them. |
