PRESIDENT URGES PARTICIPATION OF
GAMES From Waziri Isa Gwansu

President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged
participant of the ongoing 18th edition of Nigerian Universities (NUGA) to
emulate the spirit of sprtmanship of Chioma Ajunwa, an athlete who did
Nigeria pound in 1996 when she won a sold medal in Atlanta. President Obasanjo who was speaking at the opening ceremony of this year's edition of the Games at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria Saturday through the Minister of Education Professor Babalola Borishade also urged them to display serene sense of discipline and patriotism as the Games progresses. He reminded the participants to use opportunity of the Games to foster peace, brotherhood and unity among themselves and entire Nigeria. He said considering the role sports play in terms of ensuring unity and serving as creative profession for our youths, this will continue to pursue policies that will help in making sports one of the most cherished area of endeavor. "This Administration is also committed to help Nigerian students and Nigerians as a whole discover their potentially in sports so they could develop it to the fullest", he said. President Obasanjo however called on all Nigerians to support sporting activities ever because of the role it plays in diversing the energy of our youths from anti-social to desirable and sensible activities. He commended Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Abdullahi Mahdi for the opportunity to host such a wonderful event. "It is indeed an honour to host the first NIGA Games of the 21st century in ABU, despite the financial constrains in our universities, therefore I have no option than to congratulate the Vice Chancellor for a job well done" he said. In his welcome address earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Mahdi, thanked the federal government and individuals for their contribution toward successful hosting of the Games. Professor Mahdi, on behalf of all Vice Chancellors, appealed to the various tiers of Government to pay special attention to sports development in the nations wholly towers through provision of enough facilities and opportunity for training. |
